Ethanol Industry Market shares - top 10

The Renewable Fuels Association, an ethanol industry group, keeps a log of ethanol production capacity of the various U.S. producers. I took a look at this list to try and get an idea of who the big market share players are and got an interesting result:

This is an interesting market share list. First, it's clear that ADM and POET are clear market leaders. The interesting thing about these two players is that ADM isn't a pure-play ethanol producer (and if they're producing a billion gallons and selling it for, say $2/gallon at most, it only accounts for $2 billion of their $30+ billion in revenue). POET isn't a public company yet - so they haven't even really had their "coming out party" and are already very well placed in this industry.

Another thing to note is the absence of several public ethanol players including Pacific Ethanol (#14 in current capacity, including Front Range Energy's capacity), and Biofuel Energy (they have several 100+ mgy facilities waiting to come on line to-date).

Cargill, another private company, is on the top 10 list. This is interesting because ethanol is more of a side intrigue for Cargill, yet they are currently are beating out most of the field. This is a bit disturbing at the moment, but could just be a temporary aberration until new developments (like Biofuel Energy) come online. But it's interesting to note that a lot of the rest of the field (around 40%+) have not made even a basic investment to play in this game.

I'll update this list in a few more months when some more changes are made and see what happens. In the mean time, take a look at the list yourself and post a comment with some of your own findings.
